Roofs Made of Steel Tile Sheets Last Longer: Roll Forming Delivers High Quality

Model 402 Gravity Feed System: Goring Kerr Powder and Bulk Metal Detector

 

The model 402 system is supplied completely assembled and tested from the factory.  Four mounting holes are located at the top of the frame to support this system. The typical mounting method is to suspend the system with threaded rod. The threaded rod should support the complete load of the system. When securing the threaded rod to the 402 frame isolation bushings should be used on all four mounting holes. This will electrically isolate the frame from any support structure. The 402 system is not designed to support piping from any of the ports. Piping connected to any of the ports should be independently supported. Hanging piping from the reject value may distort the valve body and cause unreliable rejection.

Why is the metal free area (or zone) important when installing a metal detector?

Industrial metal detection systems function under the same principles as AM (Amplitude Modulated) radios do.  Now many of you may have forgotten what it was like to listen to AM radios but for those who do remember the one thing that stands out is noise interference.  These interferences are very similar to the external interferences faced with industrial metal detection equipment.  All industrial level metal detection systems suffer from the same inherent problem, electromagnetic radiation from the opening.

This ‘radiation’ is what companies like Safeline, Thermo Goring Kerr, Loma, Fortress Technology, Bunting and others call the metal free area or zone.  The distance away from the edge of the enclosure (where the product passes through) on both sides is what is termed the metal free zone.  This distance is critical for both installation requirements as well as performance capabilities.  Having metal within this area can cause havoc in your process environment.  You can expect false positive rejects, sporadic rejection to a reduction in performance.  The rule of thumb for many companies is that there should be no metal objects, including conveyor support structures to rollers, within `1.5 to 2.0 times the smaller opening dimension away, on each side.  Now this is a rule of thumb and can change based on the manufacturers specifications. 

When purchasing a used metal detector on a conveyor system you can not assume the installation is correct.  Often companies alter the configuration of the sensing head or various mounting components in a way that interferes with the overall performance of the system.
