GM Kills Latest Effort to Revive Camaro

A next-gen Camaro is still in play, but the light at the end of the tunnel is dimmer.

When GM killed the Chevy Camaro in March 2023, Global Chevrolet VP Scott Bell said, "Rest assured, this is not the end of Camaro's story."

Following hundreds of thousands sold, the sixth-generation Chevy Camaro was retired at the end of model year 2024 due to declining sales, government regulations and a general shift to electric vehicles.

But could the Camaro make a comeback? According to GM Authority, rumblings began early this year with a report that GM hasn't given up on the Camaro but wants a next-gen model that is "affordable and attainable." The final model started at $32,495 and increased to about $50,000, depending on the trim.

Well, according to an exclusive report from GM Authority, a GM team came up with a business plan for a seventh-generation Camaro and the effort had the support of some execs. However, when it was recently presented, it was "blown apart" — the group simply didn't make a strong enough case for a new Camaro's market potential. Maybe they needed a stronger tie-in, perhaps wrapped around the Transformers and G.I. Joe crossover teased at the end of Rise of the Beasts.

While a next-gen Camaro is "still in play," GM Authority was told, "the light at the end of the tunnel is now dimmer."

Camaros last came off the assembly line at GM's Lansing Grand River Assembly Plant in Michigan in January 2024. The plant now makes the Cadillac CT4 and CT5.

With the effort stalled, perhaps the team just needs a little encouragement: Go, little Camaro, go.
