How guardrail machine manufacturers benefit from custom roll forming solutions

Guardrail Roll Former

When fabricating highway guardrail barriers manufacturers have to keep in mind a number of key features when purchasing a rollformer. The common w-beam barrier system incorporates a number of steel components made from galvanized steel that can be cold formed.  From the straight sections to the curved sections in-line rollformers provide a simple economical solution.

Lasting performance

Manufacturing steel barriers ranging in material thickness from 2.8mm (12ga) to 3.5mm (10ga) requires a flexible robust mill.  When purchasing a mill and auxiliary equipment such as an uncoiler buyers must consider the heavy loads the master coil and forming process will create.  By its very nature guardrails are thick and heavy.  In order to protect drivers they must be able to withstand significant impact forces and these q-beam loads are at the heart of a roll forming line design.

The mill base or support system for the rollformer is a very critical design consideration.  Having enough support here will prolong the life of the mill and maintain correct profile specifications and tolerances.

Key components for a guardrail roll forming machine

The top design consideration for roll forming machines are;

  • Uncoiler capacticity
  • Lubricated feeder
  • Pre-punch presses
  • Heavy duty rolling mill
  • Large roll tooling stands
  • Discharge
